A Threat to DACA Is a Threat to The Soul of America

Well, first of all, what is the soul of America? While answering this question will vary from one person to the other, the one thing that should be present in every definition has to be diversity and immigrants; dreamers. America is a country of immigrants, that shouldn’t be a surprise, or else why would it be called the melting pot. For centuries, dreamers of every culture, race and background have been working in this country and for this country.

The children of these immigrants don’t know any home other than the United States. It is where they grew up, went to school, and made friends. Their home and their life is here, regardless of how their parents came to America. And there lies the beauty of this country. The beauty and the soul that “president” Trump is trying to take away. After all, immigrants have been making America great since day one.

DACA, The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is a program that protected minors who entered the country illegally from deportation and allowed them to obtain a work permit. These young American dreamers who grew up here and pledged allegiance every morning at school to their home are suddenly at risk of being deported from their home after president Trump rescinded DACA on September 5th, 2017.

Their jobs, future, family and their entire life is now at risk. Not only that, but the core foundation and the soul of America itself is at risk, too. If America didn’t protect the immigrants who have been working hard to achieve their American Dream since they got here, wouldn’t that be going against its very own principles? Therefore, a threat to DACA, a threat to dreamers, is a threat to the soul of America because America runs on immigrants and dreamers (and Dunkin too).
